Most Island homes outside municipal systems rely on private wells. PEI Analytical Laboratories (PEIAL) provides bacterial and chemistry testing assessed against Health Canada's Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality.
As of January 1, 2022, Islanders with residential well water can access free bacterial and general chemistry testing through PEI Analytical Laboratories (official PEI page, still stated as of the Aug 8, 2025 update).
How to test
Pick up bottles and a sample submission form at PEIAL in Charlottetown or at an Access PEI site.
Collect the sample the same day and drop it at PEIAL (Mon–Thu normal hours; Friday until 3 p.m.) or at Access PEI sites in Montague, Souris, Summerside, Wellington, O'Leary, Alberton, or Tignish by 3 p.m. (noon Fridays).
Bacteria results are typically available in about two days; chemistry within about 10 business days.
Free or subsidized programs
Free residential well testing (bacteria + general chemistry)
Since Jan 1, 2022, Islanders with residential well water get free bacterial and general chemistry testing via PEIAL. Tourism operators on private wells must still test for bacteria every three months while open. Other specialty tests may have fees — check the PEIAL fee schedule.
SCC-accredited to ISO/IEC 17025:2017. Primary public option for residential well bacteria and general chemistry.
Home test kits
Store strips and mail-in kits can be useful between official tests, but they do not replace an accredited lab for health decisions. Prefer SCC- or CALA-accredited labs (or your province's listed labs) for bacteria and chemistry panels.
PEI recommends bacteria at least once a year and a chemical analysis when a new well is drilled and every two years after.
Is testing really free?
The official Testing of Drinking Water page states free bacterial and general chemistry testing for residential well water since Jan 1, 2022. Confirm current coverage when you pick up bottles.
