Well water testing in Ontario

If your home is on a private well in Ontario, you are responsible for testing your water. The province offers a free bacteria test; everything else needs a private, licensed lab.
Ontario's free government well test only checks for bacteria
Public Health Ontario's free test looks only for E. coli and total coliforms. It does not test for chemicals such as arsenic, uranium, nitrate or PFAS, so a well can pass and still be unsafe. Test for those privately at an accredited, licensed lab. Source: Public Health Ontario ↗
How to get the free bacteria test
- Pick up a free well water sample collection kit from your nearest Public Health Ontario laboratory, your local public health unit, or a designated pickup location (not at 661 University Avenue, Toronto).
- Fill only the bottle from the kit, from an indoor cold tap with the aerator removed, following the kit instructions.
- Keep it cold (not frozen) and drop it off so it can be tested within 48 hours of collection. Ask your public health unit for drop-off locations.
- Get results in 2 to 4 business days through PHO's online Water Testing Portal, or by phone at 1-877-723-3426.

First Nations well owners on reserve: responsibility for safe drinking water on reserve is shared between First Nations and the Government of Canada. Indigenous Services Canada provides residents, on request and free of charge, bacteriological testing of their well water. Ask your community health centre, community-based water monitor or the Environmental Public Health Officer serving your community. Licensed labs that accept samples from private citizens (27)
In Ontario, labs that test drinking water must be accredited and licensed by the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks. The labs below are on the ministry's official list and are marked there as accepting samples from private citizens (Public Health Ontario's free-test labs are left out). The "Licensed for" categories come from that list; ask the lab which tests it offers (for example arsenic, uranium, nitrate or PFAS) and its prices. The ministry says to contact a lab before sending samples.
