What to do if your well flooded

  1. Don't drink it. Use bottled water, or boil water at a rolling boil for 1 minute, until a lab says it's safe.
  2. Keep the pump off until it's checked. Submerged wiring is a shock hazard — call an electrician or well contractor.
  3. Disinfect (shock-chlorinate) the well using CDC's steps or your state's instructions, then flush until the chlorine smell is gone.
  4. Test at a certified lab for total coliform and E. coli (and nitrate near farms or septic) about 7–10 days after disinfecting. Find a lab by state.
  5. Retest 1–2 weeks later and check your septic system — see EPA: your private well after a flood.

Alerts come from the National Weather Service public API (api.weather.gov); boil-water items are news reports found by search — there is no national real-time boil-water feed, so check your local health department. This page is not an official warning service.
