Well Water and Babies: What New Parents Should Test
Why babies are different
EPA notes infants drink much more water for their weight than adults, and formula made with well water carries any contaminants straight to them. Nitrate is the best-known risk.
Tests to do
- Nitrate and nitrite.
- Total coliform and E. coli.
- Manganese, arsenic, lead and uranium if they occur locally.
Nitrate and boiling
Boiling kills bacteria but concentrates nitrate. If nitrate is above 10 mg/L as N, use another water source for formula.

Questions
Can I use well water for baby formula?
Only after a recent test shows nitrate and bacteria are fine. Ask your pediatrician.
