• Municipal water and wastewater treatment plant labs on the EGLE list are left off this page, because they test their own systems rather than private wells. Out-of-state certified labs are also left off; both lists are linked under Sources.
• Chips show only coliform bacteria, nitrate, arsenic, lead, and PFAS. Many labs are certified for more analytes; the full list per lab is in the EGLE PDF.

What the state recommends

• Standard water quality concerns for private wells include coliform bacteria, nitrate, nitrite, fluoride, chloride, sulfate, sodium, hardness, and metals like arsenic, copper, lead, iron, manganese, and uranium. Source
• Get your water tested when you notice an unusual color, odor, or appearance, when buying or selling a home, when a new well is installed, and during routine maintenance of an old well or pump. Source
• Several county health departments test well water on site (Washtenaw, Oakland, Kalamazoo, Saginaw, and some Upper Peninsula counties). If you are not near one, you can request a test through the EGLE Laboratory. Source
• Ask your local health department what to test for, since recommendations differ by area and household. Source
