Well testing after a flood in Arizona
Use a state-certified lab for a bacteria test. Our Arizona certified lab list is copied from the official state list. Your county or local health department can tell you about any free or low-cost testing offered after a flood. Source for the lab list: Arizona Department of Health Services Office of Laboratory Licensure & Certification (lab certification).
Your well after a flood
- Stay away from the wellhead and pump until the power is off and floodwater has gone down. Electrical parts may be wet.
- Do not drink the well water until it has been tested. Use bottled water or boil water as your health department advises.
- Check the wellhead for damage, debris, a loose or missing cap, or soil washed away around the casing.
- Disinfect the well (shock chlorination) if floodwater reached it, following EPA guidance for your well after a flood. Our shock chlorination calculator helps estimate the amount of chlorine.
- Test for total coliform and E. coli at a state-certified lab once the chlorine has been flushed out, and test again later to confirm the water stays clean.
